Weekend poll: Who is most to blame for the Kings' woes
Your vote has been counted, thank you for voting.
The adage doesn't apply no, I don't remember it like it was yesterday, because it happened in Las Vegas and, well, you know.
A long-planned trip in January 1991 to Sin City to meet up with a buddy from New York happened to fall on the same weekend the two-time defending Super Bowl champion 49ers were taking on the Giants for the NFC championship.
Dominick and his brothers, Alfonso and Frankie, grew up sons of an Italian bar owner in Moravia, N.Y., where they loved their Giants.
The trash-talking back then, you actually had to talk when someone was 3,000 miles away began early that week and was at a fever pitch by the time we all arrived in Las Vegas.
The 49ers, led by Joe Montana, Jerry Rice and Roger Craig, were eight-point favorites, far too many points for Dominick, who had little use for what he called the 49ers' "sissy" style.
The 49ers held a 13-9 lead in the fourth quarter when Giants defensive end Leonard Marshall tackled Montana from behind, knocking him out of the game. After the Giants pulled to within 13-12, linebacker Lawrence Taylor recovered Craig's fumble. Seven plays later, Matt Bahr kicked his fifth field goal of the game as time ran out.
Giants 15, 49ers 12.
The Giants' smashmouth style beat the 49ers' finesse offense, and Dominick still won't let anyone forget.
Last Sunday night, after the Giants beat the Packers in Green Bay, the phone rang.
The conversation was heated and loud; the bet remains quiet for now.
