Check it out: Outdoors expo, monster trucks, belly dancing

Great outdoors

What: Outdoors enthusiasts will flock to Cal Expo this weekend for the annual International Sportsmen's Exposition, which features products, demonstrations and contests galore. Highlights include the dog dock jumping contest and sports dog agility competition, as well as a casting for accuracy contest for anglers. Among the display highlights is the Eastman Trophy Deer Display. Seminars include a bass tank demonstration from professional bass fishermen and tips about fishing for Delta Stripers.

Where: 1600 Exposition Blvd., Sacramento.

When: 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. today; 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday.

Cost: $15 per day; 15 and younger are free. Parking is $10.

Rock the museum

What: Children can have fun making their own pet rocks at the Discovery Museum Science and Space Center. They can also tour the Rockin' Rock Pets exhibit to learn about other types of rocks, crystals and fossils.

Where: 3615 Auburn Blvd., Sacramento.

When: Noon to 4 p.m. both days.

Cost: $8 adults 18 and older; $6 seniors (60 and older) and teens (ages 13 to 17); $5 children ages 4 to 12; free for children 3 and younger.

Monster mash

What: Monster Jam continues to rumble at Power Balance Pavilion. Monster truck racing and freestyle competitions are the main attractions. On Sunday, there will be a Party in the Pits before the main event.

Where: 1 Sports Parkway, Sacramento.

When: 7:30 p.m. today; 2 p.m. Sunday; Party in the Pits from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday (must have event ticket for Sunday's show, plus pit pass).

Cost: $22.50 to $52.50 general; $7.50 for ages 2 to 12 (parking is $12 per car).

Violin virtuoso

What: The Sacramento Philharmonic is presenting David Kim, concertmaster of the acclaimed Philadelphia Orchestra, in Sacramento and Folsom for a performance of Camille Saint-Saëns' Violin Concerto No. 3. Kim, who has been concertmaster of the orchestra since 1999, was introduced to the violin at 3 years old when his mother, a well-known pianist in her native Korea, put an eighth-size violin in his hands. In 1986 he was the only American violinist to win a prize at the International Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow.

Where: Community Center, 1301 L St., Sacramento (today); Three Stages at Folsom Lake College, Folsom (Sunday).

When: 8 p.m. today; 2 p.m. Sunday.

Cost: $15 to $97.

Undulating night

What: The Belly Dance Gala Show at the Fair Oaks Community Clubhouse will feature the area's top belly dancers, with live Egyptian music by Flowers of the Nile. Aubre Hill of Los Angeles is the scheduled special guest dancer. There will also be Middle Eastern food.

Where: 7997 California Ave., Fair Oaks.

When: 7 to 9 p.m. (Doors open at 6 p.m.).

Cost: $15 in advance; $20 at the door.
