In June 2005, a woman named Kim Wheeler was killed when two cars were racing on Del Paso Road, and one of them hit her and flipped her car. The driver of the car that hit her was 18-year-old William Joseph Mitchell. Whatever happened to him and the driver of the other car who later turned himself in?
SacNative, Sacramento
According to Sacramento Superior Court online records, William Joseph Mitchell and Matthew Beltran pleaded no contest to vehicular manslaughter in the death of Kimberly Marie Wheeler, 40, a single mother from Woodland.
According to stories in The Bee, Mitchell and Beltran were engaged in an illegal street race when Mitchell's 2003 Mazda 6, traveling at least 80 mph, crashed into the driver's side of Wheeler's 1994 Chevrolet Cavalier. Wheeler was leaving work in the Natomas area, pulling out from Professor Lane to make a left turn onto Del Paso Road.
The impact pushed the front of Mitchell's vehicle three or four feet into Wheeler's Chevrolet, shearing off both doors on the driver's side.
Beltran, the driver of a 1988 Mazda RX-7 that sped away from the scene, later turned himself in to the California Highway Patrol.
Mitchell and Beltran in April 2009 received two-year suspended prison sentences and five years of probation. According to court online records, Mitchell's probation status was terminated in September 2011, when he pleaded guilty to a felony charge of driving under the influence. Now 24 years old, he is incarcerated at Deuel Vocational Institution in Tracy.
Whatever happened to Cindy Kay May in the 1990 killing of her mother and oldest daughter, Ell Mae Carrell, in the Robla area on Marysville Boulevard?
Janette Khan, Sacto
Cindy Kay May was sentenced in 1993 to two consecutive prison terms of 15 years to life for killing and mutilating her 70-year-old mother, Mary Catherine May, and 5-year-old daughter, Ella May Carrell, with a kitchen knife.
The victims were found in the Marysville Boulevard home May and her four children shared with her mother.
The prosecutor asked jurors to convict May of first-degree murder, but they opted for the lesser charge of second-degree murder because they believed May was mentally ill at the time of the June 5, 1990, murders, according to a story in The Bee.
A different jury found that May was competent to stand trial, and she refused to plead not guilty by reason of insanity.
Now 48 years old, May is at the California Institution for Women in Corona.
