A comprehensive plan to improve the region's flood defenses will be presented Friday in Sacramento at a meeting of the Central Valley Flood Protection Board.

Known as the Central Valley Flood Protection Plan, it includes a $17 billion menu of improvements ranging from setback levees to bridge improvements and floodplain expansion. The largest single share of the work, estimated at $6.5 billion, is proposed in the Sacramento region.

The plan is required by flood safety legislation approved in 2007. It represents the first comprehensive attempt in a century to understand the condition of the region's flood defenses and plan improvements.

Friday's meeting begins at 8:30 a.m. and is expected to last until noon as the lengthy plan is described in detail. It is not a public hearing, although the board plans several hearings before the expected adoption on July 1.

The meeting will take place in the ground-floor auditorium of the state Natural Resources Building, 1416 9th St., in Sacramento. It will also be webcast live, and the webcast will be archived for viewing after the meeting.
