Giants pitcher Tim Lincecum is a star among stars, a showman with unique flair and, despite his 2011 record, a winner. He carries loads of goodwill, based on his eminence and the role he played in bringing a World Series title to San Francisco.
But now comes reality. Lincecum, already rich from the $23 million he earned during the past two seasons, is cashing in, superstar style.
On Tuesday, Lincecum agreed to a two-year contract worth $40.5 million. He reportedly turned down a five-year deal for $100 million. Some say he wanted a longer deal, but others recall Lincecum's stated desire to keep his options open with free agency coming to him in 2013.
If the Giants were reluctant to go for a six- or seven-year deal, consider why. They still bleed from the self-inflicted wound of Barry Zito's long-term deal, not to mention the less-odious but clearly failed multiyear pact with Aaron Rowand.
Lincecum, 27, is still young but so was Zito, then 29, at the start of his first Giants season and, other than issuing way too many walks, on top of his game. Along with Matt Cain another beloved Giants pitcher also negotiating a new contract Lincecum provides grace, proficiency, youth and a lovable presence upon which the franchise can build.
So for now Lincecum remains with the Giants, even though all too soon he could be gone. That's entertainment, I guess.
