Aerojet's offices, along with 1,400 acres scheduled for development between Rancho Cordova and Folsom, will retain the current 95742 Rancho Cordvoa ZIP code.
The U.S. Postal Service turned down Aerojet's request to change the ZIP code for the area to 95630, a Folsom ZIP code.
Rancho Cordova city officials expressed both hurt and anger last fall when they learned of Aerojet's request, calling it an act of betrayal by the corporation that sparked the community's development more than 60 years ago.
Aerojet officials said they sought the change as part of a long-term planning effort to ensure efficient mail delivery. The area has a Rancho Cordova ZIP code but is in an unincorporated area that is in neither Rancho Cordova nor Folsom's sphere of influence -- an area a city might expect to annex.
Troy Holt, a spokesman for the city of Rancho Cordova, said city officials were informed of the Postal Service's decision Thursday. Postal Service officials reported that the 95742 ZIP code area is at only 21 percent of its service capacity, indicating that it can handle future growth.
Aerojet, which has 45 days to appeal the decision, issued a written statement expressing appreciation for the Postal Service's consideration of the request and its impact study, which was based on established operational criteria.
The statement says, "It was understood that the determining factor in considering a ZIP code change would be effective mail delivery for an area that would under go enormous planned growth, and not about municipal boundaries."
Holt said Rancho Cordova officials welcome the Postal Service's decision and continue to regard Aerojet as an important community partner.
"They're the largest landowner in the city," he said.
