Area coaches joke that Mike Takayama is in such good standing he's allowed to lose a Sierra Foothill League game, oh, every six seasons or so.
It happened Friday night.
Takayama's Del Oro girls lost to upstart Nevada Union 44-42 to cap the first half of SFL play and halt the Golden Eagles' 63-game league winning streak.
Sydney Porter had 19 points and five rebounds, Kaylin Martin scored nine points, and Nicole Lierly scored eight for the Miners, a Sac-Joaquin Section power in the 1980s and early '90s.
"It was a somber mood (after the game)," Takayama said. "It was a battle, but hat's off to NU. They beat us. Now, we'll try to start another league streak."
Del Oro still has an impressive streak with seven consecutive SFL titles. The Golden Eagles badly wanted to keep the league streak going, particularly juniors Brianna Ruiz, who had 22 points and nine rebounds on Friday, and Stephanie Geyer, who grabbed 10 rebounds.
Del Oro on Saturday showed resolve, falling 44-43 to section Division I power Lincoln of Stockton, which beat Del Oro 62-47 earlier this season and has wins against ranked teams Inderkum (74-50), Oak Ridge (39-37) and Antelope (64-53).
NU had lost to Del Oro 56-33 in the Oak Ridge Trojan Shoot-out on Dec. 10. The Miners are the lone unbeaten team in the SFL at 5-0 and debut in The Bee rankings this season at No. 11.

Haleigh Filer broke the Capital Christian record for three-pointers in a game twice. The 5-foot-8 sophomore guard made eight threes against Folsom in a 58-48 nonleague win Dec. 28, when she had 31 points on 11-of-18 shooting.
On Friday, she again sank eight threes in a 44-43 loss to West Campus in a Golden Empire League contest in which she had 30 points on 9-of-17 shooting.
Filer had a season-high 36 points on 12-of-16 shooting in a 65-57 win over Grant on Dec. 9. She is averaging 17.3 points and leads the section with 59 three-pointers, breaking the single-season school record of 54 set by Jen Ha in 2005.

Rocklin, another SFL team, debuts in The Bee rankings at No. 19 under coach Rob Ferraro. The Thunder lost to Del Oro (47-45) and NU (50-47) in SFL play and beat previously ranked Woodcreek 51-35, led by Lydia Summers' 15 points and Shannon Garvella's 13. Rocklin hosts Del Oro on Thursday.
Under rookie coach Jessica Kunisaki, McClatchy makes its first appearance in the rankings since former Lions coach Harvey Tahara retired after last season.
McClatchy expects a return to the postseason under Kunisaki, a former Lions player and longtime junior varsity coach. McClatchy led top-ranked Sacramento 33-23 at halftime of a Metro Conference game last week before falling 61-47. The Lions recovered with a 49-41 win over previously ranked Valley.
Rio Americano, which defeated Antelope 53-47 in Capital Athletic League play behind Elizabeth Moulton's 14 points and Fie Brandt's 13, returned to the rankings at No. 17.
El Camino is in first place in the CAL at 5-0 after a 59-43 win over Rio Americano. Simone Sheppard had 19 points and 12 rebounds, and Alexis Haffner scored 16 points with 10 rebounds.
Inderkum crushed River Valley 67-38 behind Riana Byrd's 25 points and 17 rebounds to solidify first place in the Tri-County Conference. Sakara Brewer scored 12 for Inderkum.
Byrd is third in the section in rebounds with 14.8 per game, behind Kendra Jeffcott of Wilton Christian (16.8) and Antelope's Ellis (15.4), who grabbed 17 against Rio Americano.
