Re "Buyers will be key to state goal of cleaner cars" (Editorials, Feb. 1): I very much agree with Wednesday's editorial on the historic California Advanced Clean Car Rules.
Regulations can't require consumers to purchase cars regardless of how green the vehicle may be and how much money they will save on fuel bills.
It is precisely for that reason that the Air Resources Board included a mid-term review, not only for the zero-emission-vehicle (ZEV) requirement, but for the smog and greenhouse gas reduction rules.
For clarification, the editorial included hybrids as a ZEV category. They are "plug-in" hybrids such as the Chevy Volt and more models to be introduced this year.
The price of gas will greatly determine the marketability of these emission-free vehicles. Consumers will determine on their own if they will save money with a car that fills up on electrons, not petroleum.

• Don't use all capital letters. That's akin to yelling and not appreciated by the audience.
• Don't flag other users' comments just because you don't agree with their point of view. Please only flag comments that violate these guidelines.
