Le Rivage Hotel, Sacramento's stylish but financially troubled riverfront inn, has filed for bankruptcy protection.

The hotel's parent Captain's Table Hotel LLC filed for Chapter 11 reorganization on Thursday in U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Sacramento, listing debts of $10 million to $50 million.

The bankruptcy filing comes five months after the 101-room boutique hotel dodged the auction sale by its chief lender OneWest Bank, which is owed $30 million.

It also comes as one of the hotel's biggest shareholders, local developer Bob Cook, filed for personal bankruptcy last August.

Cook could not be reached and his attorney Daniel Weiss had no immediate comment.

The bankruptcy filing listed One West Bank as the company's largest secured creditor, followed by Hearn Construction of Vacaville, which is owed $404,862.

The company said it had 50 to 99 creditors.

Envisioned as a "first-class hotel with an Italian and French Riviera" theme, Le Rivage opened in January 2008 just as the global economic meltdown was getting underway.

The hotel's opening also faced years of delay due to neighborhood opposition and environmental challenges.
