The Bee posse's weekly update of the latest in area conditions, bargains, etc.
Course - What you need to know
Ancil Hoffman - Fairway grass thin, greens fair; emphasis on improving pace of play working
Castle Oaks - Good place for three-hour afternoon round; greens/fairways/tees all good
Cherry Island - Good shape, particularly greens, which are fast; new 10th hole isn't finished, resulting in two par 3s (Nos. 10 and 13) of about 100 yards; tees need work
Dry Creek - Most back-nine fairways pretty bare but greens in great shape with exception of Nos. 11 and 14; $25 to walk weekends ($18 weekdays) through February
Empire Ranch - Fantastic conditions; stubborn geese don't appear to be going anywhere soon
Lockeford Springs - Greens slower than practice green; tree-planting spree on Nos. 7, 9, 12, 16
Mather - After Tuesday's needed sprinkle, it's back to shorts-wearing weather today; top conditions, especially greens, which remain among best in the area
Whitney Oaks - Greens in good shape, rolling at moderate speed; try the clam chowder
Sunset Whitney - Bunkers full of soft sand, resulting in fried-egg lies; greens smooth and fast
Woodcreek - Excellent throughout; fairways in summer shape and rough manageable
