Re "Will San Francisco vote to drain Hetch Hetchy" (Dan Morain, Feb. 15): For those who propose draining Hetch Hetchy, California is basically a desert. It lives on run-off and stored water through most of the year. Unfortunately the run-off doesn't last through our long, dry summers.
Last year I watched as hundreds of thousands of gallons per second of water were dumped from several dams. I would guess we will wish we had that water later this year. Without run-off and stored water, most California farms, businesses, residents and fish will be affected by a shortage.
Census Bureau projections indicate that the California population will be increasing by 10 million in the next 30 years. Where will they get their water from?
I would prefer to have a beautiful pristine Hetch Hetchy Valley, but the water needs of San Francisco and the rest of California would be adversely affected by the removal of the dam.
