About 2.4 million people live in the Sacramento region, but only a few trace their ancestry to the area.
When asked by the U.S. Census Bureau, residents of the four-county area most commonly said their ancestors came from England, Mexico, Germany, Ireland, Italy or the Philippines.
This map is color-coded to show the areas most commonly listed by Sacramento residents as the homes of their ancestors, according to the census bureau's American Community Survey
Notes: Some people listed more than one ancestry; each response is mapped here. Some trace their ancestry to areas smaller or larger than national borders. About 87,000 Scots and 16,000 Welshmen are listed in England on this map; about 26,000 Hmong are listed in Vietnam on this map; about 10,000 Koreans are listed in South Korea on this map. About 10,000 local residents listed their ancestry as "African," without specifying a region of Africa. Finally, about 50,000 Sacramento residents simply listed their ancestry as "American" and are mapped in the U.S.
