Cemetery's black history

What: Celebrate the stories of Sacramento's black pioneers at the Historic City Cemetery. Teachers, soldiers, restaurant owners and other notable residents will be featured. Parking is available across the street from the 10th Street gate.

Where: 1000 Broadway, Sacramento.

When: 10 a.m.

Cost: Free (donations are accepted. Funds are used for ongoing restoration and preservation projects).

Birders unite

What: Take part in the Great Backyard Bird Count at the Effie Yeaw Nature Center. Hosted by the Audubon Society, the event is geared to first-time birders, families and children.

Cost: Free (parking is $5 per car).

Fat Tuesday on Saturday

What: Jazz, rock 'n' roll and Cajun music will permeate the bars, restaurants and clubs of Old Sacramento to celebrate Mardi Gras. The Old Sacramento Business Association is offering celebrants VIP access to 10 venues.

Where: Old Sacramento State Historic Park.

When: 5 to 10 p.m.

Cost: Tickets $15 (for adults 21 and older).

Kustom Kars

What: The 62nd Sacramento Autorama, featuring some of the West's top automotive craftspeople and hundreds of colorful cars, continues at Cal Expo. Billed as one of the longest-running indoor car shows in the world, the event spotlights more than 450 custom cars, hot rods, classics, motorcycles and specialty vehicles from across the nation.

Where: 1600 Exposition Blvd., Sacramento.

When: 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. today; 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday.

Cost: Tickets $18 for adults; $10 for children ages 6-12; free for children 5 and younger when accompanied by an adult. Parking $10 on Cal Expo grounds.

Frothy suds' tales

What: Beer historian Ed Carroll, author of "Sacramento's Breweries," will discuss the city's rich suds history at Time Tested Books in Sacramento. The talk is part of the store's Living Library series. Peter Keat and Tim Foster will host the event.

When: 7 p.m. (doors open at 6 p.m.).
