Steinbeck's birthday

John Steinbeck once said, "Man, unlike anything organic or inorganic in the universe, grows beyond his work, walks up the stairs of his concepts and emerges ahead of his accomplishments."

The feats of this famous author, whose 110th birthday would be Feb. 27, will be celebrated from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. next Sunday at the museum that bears his name in Salinas.

Festivities will include performances by Ballet Folklorico and the Youth Orchestra Salinas, along with children's activities, reading circles and birthday cake at the National Steinbeck Center, 1 Main St.

Octopus gets its week

Fans of the undersea world may celebrate Giant Pacific Octopus Week through Feb. 26 at the Aquarium of the Bay, the Embarcadero at Beach Street, San Francisco.

Activities include octopus trivia, informative talks about octopus and behind-the-scenes tours.

Pack it in

Russia cruise meeting

The El Dorado Hills Chamber of Commerce will hold an informational meeting on a cruise trip in Russia scheduled for Sept. 2-12. Highlights include Moscow, Red Square, St. Petersburg and the Volga River.

The meeting will be at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at the California Welcome Center Chamber of Commerce, 2085 Vine St., Suite 105, El Dorado Hills.

Bomb Day lecture

The Chinese American Museum of Northern California will address the theme "Staking a Claim in Chinese American History" during its Bomb Day lecture series from 1 to 5 p.m. Saturday, part of the annual Bok Kai festival.
