Sophomore starting pitcher Tanner Mendonca baffled Cal State Northridge hitters Saturday as he recorded Sacramento State's first nine-inning shutout since 2007 in the Hornets' 2-0 victory, Sac State reported.

Mendonca scattered five hits with two strikeouts and two walks in his first career shutout as the host Hornets improved to 1-1.

• UC Davis lost to visiting Utah 7-1. Paul Politi and Nick Lynch each had two hits for the Aggies (1-1), UCD reported on its website.

UC Davis teams fall

• Junior Katie Yamamura won the uneven bars and all-around titles while Leah Housman and Michelle Ho claimed meet wins on balance beam and floor exercise, respectively, but Air Force overtook visiting UCD in the final rotation in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation women's gymnastics meet in Colorado Springs, Colo. The Falcons won 191.625-190.925 against the Aggies (2-9), UCD reported.

• The UCD softball team managed just four runners on four hits as the Aggies lost to host San Diego State 3-0 in the Campbell Cartier Classic, UCD reported. The Aggies fell to 3-6.

• The UCD women's tennis team won three singles matches, but Santa Clara swept the doubles matches as the Aggies fell 4-3 on the road, UCD reported. UCD fell to 3-8 after facing its eighth ranked opponent of the season.

Griffin fight canceled

A contract dispute led to the cancellation of Saturday night's co-feature fight in Montreal between Sacramento light heavyweight Otis Griffin (23-9-2) and former Olympic boxer Eleider Alvarez (7-0) of Colombia.

Griffin said he refused to fight when informed by Canadian officials at the weigh-in that his planned 12-round bout with Alvarez would be for the same pay but not for a minor title as advertised.
