Published: Monday, Feb. 20, 2012 - 12:00 am | Page 3B

Kudos to: Celia Cottle

Accomplishment: Won the inaugural Jazz Educational Award from the Sacramento Traditional Jazz Society

Details: Society members, the folks who put on the city's annual jazz festival, say that Davis resident Cottle makes her living teaching private music lessons, but she has also been busy in her spare time organizing and directing youth jazz ensembles and combos for 20 years. Cottle does this because she enjoys the music and because she enjoys sharing her love of traditional jazz with young musicians.

Kudos to: Anika Greene

Accomplishment: Greene, robotic coordinator at Discovery Museum and Space Center, was selected as Jr. FIRST Lego League program coordinator for Northern California.

Details: The FIRST Lego League is a competitive robotics endeavor using Legos for elementary school-age kids. She will be instrumental in planning, scheduling and producing expositions for 70 FIRST Lego League teams. Greene was an official at the FIRST World Festival in St. Louis last year, which attracted more than 700 teams.

Kudos to: Isabella Martinez and Rashmi Athavale

Accomplishment: First-place scholarship winners in the Veterans of Foreign Wars patriotic competition

Details: Martinez, a St. Francis High School student, won first in the Voice of Democracy contest, which required writing, recording and submitting a three-to-five minute speech on "Is there pride in serving in our military?" Athavale, a student at Sutter Middle School, earned top honors for middle-schoolers in the Patriot's Pen program. The theme was "Are you proud of your country?"

Kudos to: Sally Phonthachack

Accomplishment: Winner of Sacramento Asian Pacific Chamber of Commerce Catalyst Scholarship at Drexel University

Details: Phonthachack came from war-torn Laos at an early age. Already a graduate of American River College and California State University, Sacramento, she is going for her masters in business administration at Drexel. She also is one of the co-chairs of the Hmong Mien Lao Community Action Network.
