Schwartz-Edmisten keeps scoring for Sac Waldorf

Chris Schwartz-Edmisten has faced every defense imaginable this season, anything to disrupt a shooter who has battered all comers.

Traps, zones, man coverage. Double teams, triple teams – anything short of a 5-on-1 press to stymie Schwartz-Edmisten, the leading scorer in the state and sixth in the country at 34.6 points per game.

The 6-foot-3 senior point guard for Sacramento Waldorf High School shoots over foes, slices into the lane and can post up. He is a big-time player at a Division V school.

Make no mistake, says his coach Dean Stark, this guy's legitimate.

"He's phenomenal," said Stark, who has guided 25 teams into the playoffs in 26 seasons. "He does everything and doesn't have a weakness. He can attack the basket, hit the three, handle the ball and post up. Very clutch player.

"Yes, we're a small school, but he'd start on any team around. I know there are some great players out there, and I'm almost embarrassed to say it as a D-V coach, but I'd put him up there as the area's Player of the Year this season. He's been that incredible."

Here's why: Schwartz-Edmisten produces in pressure games that mean just as much to the 23-3 Waves as they would to any large-school power.

Schwartz-Edmisten is an efficient scorer, shooting 52 percent – and he's not to be confused with an Allen Iverson-like gunner.

He has scored 40 or more points 10 times this season and had 28 against large-school power Burbank in an early nonconference loss.

Last week against rival Victory Christian, Schwartz-Edmisten faked as if he was attacking the lane, stepped back and hit a three-pointer for a late three-point lead. He later made four free throws to finish with 41 points in a 74-67 win.

He scored 43 points against Victory Christian earlier this season in a 61-53 triumph, overcoming a sore ankle.

Schwartz-Edmisten has made 38 of 40 free-throw attempts in the final minute of games. He's shooting 87 percent from the line overall.

"I'm having a lot of fun, and we're having a great year," Schwartz-Edmisten said. "I was a spot-up shooter as a freshman on varsity, then took over at point guard and started to attack the basket more. For D-V, I'm pretty tall for a point guard, so I post up a lot, too. Anything to help us win."

Schwartz-Edmisten, who has a 3.9 grade-point average, has drawn interest from colleges, including Sacramento State. He talks of his senior project involving digital arts, of his courses in zoology, economics and world cultures.

And basketball? It's his passion, absolutely.

He has a wall-size poster of Michael Jordan in his bedroom and admires Kings rookie Jimmer Fredette.

Schwartz-Edmisten also studies the tendencies of pro, college and other high school players.

The Schwartz-Edmisten family has a photo of 2-year-old Chris at a birthday party. While the other children were in the bounce house, Schwartz-Edmisten was on the side shooting baskets.

For his second birthday, the theme was all basketball – cake and a little tyke hoop, too.

"I love the game," he said. "With all the defenses I've seen this year, it's definitely been a great challenge."

As for where he got his basketball genes, his father said: "I don't know where that all came from. I played football in high school in Oregon. His mother didn't play. There was a day I could take him in basketball, beat him, but then he went over 5 feet."
