What: Sacramento County master gardeners will demonstrate how to prune shrubs and dormant fruit trees as well as how to groom ornamental grasses, start a compost pile and set up a worm bin. Got a question? These folks have answers. Bring examples of pests or problem plant material (sealed inside a plastic bag) for diagnosis.

Carnaval sambas in midtown

What: The Brazilian Center for Cultural Exchange of Sacramento presents Carnaval 2012, featuring live Afro-Brazilian band Brasil Brazil Show from Los Angeles. Revelers can samba with the dancers from Mistura Brasileira Samba Dance Company.

Juggling events all weekend

What: A community show will highlight the Damento Juggling Festival at George Washington Carver High School. Today, there will be an open gym for people of all ages and abilities to learn to juggle. The community show featuring top jugglers is planned at 7 p.m. today. There will also be an open gym to learn juggling Sunday.

Where: 10101 Systems Parkway, Rancho Cordova

When: 10 a.m. to midnight today and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday

Cost: Tickets are $10 for the community show. The open gym events are free.

Meet 'Mather Field' authors

What: James Scott and Tom Tolley, authors of "Images of America: Mather Field," will present a history of Mather plus an exhibit of artifacts at the Rancho Cordova Library. Light refreshments will be served.

And the Oscar goes to ... charity

What: The Capital City AIDS Fund hosts Oscar Night Sacramento at the Hyatt Regency during the award show's broadcast. The event also features live entertainment. Founded in 1994, the organization has raised more than $2 million for HIV/AIDS nonprofits in Sacramento. For its annual Oscar gala, the Hyatt's ballroom will sport a nightclub-style setting with 20 television screens for watching the show.
