Kevin Johnson has joined mayors from across the country supporting marriage equality, according to a news release from an organization that had been pressuring him.

The Sacramento mayor has said that he's against marriage bans such as Proposition 8, but he also believes that marriage is meant for a man and woman.

He had rebuffed prior requests by the Stonewall Democratic Club of Greater Sacramento to sign on to Mayors for the Freedom to Marry, but Friday agreed to join the group of more than 160 municipal leaders who have pledged support for gay marriage, according to the news release.

The mayor's office on Saturday confirmed the signing.

"This means so much for so many people," Stonewall Club President Sam Catalano said in a written statement.
