Dentist Edward K. Ishii practiced over 60 years
Dr. Edward K. Ishii, who served generations of Sacramento patients as a dentist for more than 60 years, died April 10 of heart complications, his family said. He was 87.
Dr. Ishii retired last year from a K Street dental office where he had worked since 1969. He started in 1948 at the site now occupied by Macy's in Downtown Plaza, which was the heart of a vibrant Japanese American community. Recent patients included grandchildren of first-generation Japanese Americans whom he treated after they returned from World War II internment.
"He liked working," said his daughter Carolyn, a dentist who worked with him. "He had a lot of very loyal patients whom he had known over 50 years."
Dr. Ishii was a longtime member and volunteer at Sacramento Japanese United Methodist Church. He was a founding member of Sacramento Senators Lions Club and an avid tennis player who belonged to Sutter Lawn Tennis Club for more than 50 years.
He missed his Sacramento High School graduation ceremony in 1942 after his family was sent to a Tule Lake internment camp.
He was allowed to leave internment to earn a dental degree at the University of Minnesota. He was drafted into the Army and served in the dental corps during the Korean War.
Dr. Ishii was predeceased by his wife of 52 years, Yuriko. Besides his daughter, he is survived by a son, Loren, and two grandchildren.
A memorial is set for 12:30 p.m. Sunday at Parkview Presbyterian Church, 727 T St., Sacramento. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to any charity.
