Accomplishment: Members of church helped rebuild a home in Joplin, Mo., destroyed by tornado.
Details: The 13 members of the church on Pope Avenue in Arden Arcade did dry-walling and other work in one home and installed a bathroom in another. In the past five years, Northminster teams have helped rebuild 15 homes, churches and businesses damaged by flood and storms in New Orleans, Galveston, Texas, and Nashville, Tenn. They have tiled a church basement, installed floorboards and windows, added porches and painted.
Kudos to: Dr. Malathi Srinivasan
Accomplishment: "Clinician educator of the year" from the Society of General Internal Medicine for California/Hawaii region
Details: Srinivasan, associate professor of internal medicine at the UC Davis School of Medicine, is known for her energetic and enthusiastic approach that she brings to teaching, research and clinical care. She is known to bring trainees on trips around the hospital to introduce them to diagnostic labs and clinical departments, providing insight into inner workings of the hospital.
Kudos to: Edythe Haendel Schwartz
Accomplishment: Winner of 2012 Friends of Acadia Poetry Prize for her poem "A Natural Phenomenon"
Details: Her winning poem will be published in the spring 2012 issue of "Friends of Acadia Journal." "I was keen on finding a home for 'A Natural Phenomenon' in a journal that promotes conservation, highlights ecological concerns and celebrates the natural world," said the Davis resident.
Kudos to: El Dorado County Sheriff's Deputy Terrie Cissna
Accomplishment: 2011 officer of the year for the Sheriff's Office
Details: Cissna found her niche in the rural Georgetown Divide area of the county, coming to know many of the residents by first name. She has developed contacts that provide a wealth of information. Said to be tenacious in her investigations and respected by the residents of communities such as Cool, Garden Valley, Coloma, Kelsey, Volcanoville and Pilot Hill.
