Fire officials were searching Sunday for the cause of a blaze that displaced eight families Saturday in a Citrus Heights apartment complex.

The fire Saturday caused significant damage to eight units at the Edgewater Apartments at 5930 Sunrise Vista Drive, according to the Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District.

Assistant Chief Walt White said investigators had not been able to rule out outdoor cooking or improperly discarded smoking material as the cause.

The fire began on a second-floor patio deck at the back of the structure. Crews arrived at the fire at 7 p.m. and doused the fire in about 30 minutes. No residents were injured, but three firefighters were treated for heat-related injuries and one firefighter suffered minor facial burns.

The American Red Cross helped displaced families in need of shelter.
