Repairs are expected to begin today on water diversion gates near Walnut Grove that failed last week.
The Delta Cross Channel Gates became stuck in the open position on May 29. Operated by the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation, the gates divert Sacramento River water into the interior of the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta, then to state and federal water export pumps near Tracy.
Reclamation spokesman Pete Lucero said Monday he did not know the nature of the failure or the repairs. But the work requires the two gates to be closed. Engineers figured out a way to do that, though it will take longer than usual. They planned to begin closing the gates at 5 p.m. Monday, and urged boaters to avoid the area.
The repairs are expected to take 10 to 14 days, and boating access through the gates will be cut off during that period.
The gates are normally closed on weekdays to prevent migrating salmon from straying into the mazelike interior channels of the Delta, and opened on weekends for boaters.
The gates failed as the Bureau of Reclamation moved to close them after Memorial Day.
