Siemens announced today that 44 employees will be laid off from its south Sacramento manufacturing plant where light-rail cars are made. Coming shortly after the company announced that it will build 18 of 70 light-rail vehicles for Portland, Ore., at the Sacramento facility, officials said the move "is necessary to align staffing with the current business and project volume."

Officials of Siemens Rail Systems announced today that 44 positions are being eliminated at its Sacramento manufacturing plant.

Siemens spokesman Michael Krampe released a statement saying "this action is necessary to align staffing with the current business and project volume."

"These decisions are never easy, and Siemens understands the impact this has on the employees and the community," Krampe said. "Unfortunately, the company must take these steps to remain competitive in this challenging market."

Krampe said affected employees "will receive a fair separation package including severance pay and medical, dental and vision benefits in addition to outplacement services."

The news comes less than two weeks after Siemens announced that the Sacramento facility will build 18 of its 70 light-rail vehicles for TriMet in Portland, Ore., under a $73 million contract.

All manufacturing for that project will be done at Siemens' facility on French Road in south Sacramento. That plant is powered in part by 2 megawatts of solar energy.

The first new rail cars are expected to be delivered to Portland in August 2014.
