COACH OF THE YEAR

Duane Zauner / Bear River

When the Bruins won a fourth consecutive Sac-Joaquin Section Division IV title in 2010, Zauner was ready to walk away after 14 seasons. "I was tired," recalled Zauner, an original member of the Lake of the Pines school's coaching staff who has struggled with the pain of having both hips replaced. "But I talked with the players, most of whom were sophomores then, and I made a commitment to see it through."

After a disappointing first-round exit in the 2011 D-III playoffs, Bear River won it all this season. Its impressive 9-3 win over Whitney in the championship game sent Zauner, 56, into retirement on a high note.
