Re "Small bill reflects a big issue" (Dan Walters, June 20): Good column on AB 858.
The Made in the USA Foundation, which worked with the Federal Trade Commission on the federal "Made in the USA" standard, strongly supports AB 858. In addition, I was the attorney who brought the Kwikset case that went to the California Supreme Court, and opposed the trial lawyers' greed for easy cases.
The goal of the law should be to help companies keep manufacturing in California, not to make it easy for attorneys to prove their case.
The Consumer Federation's opposition is misguided. The current California standard is virtually unattainable by most businesses and encourages companies to go offshore. As a former attorney for Consumers Union (publisher of Consumer Reports) I am disturbed that the Consumer Federation's position does not help consumers, but harms companies who want to manufacture in the United States.
