Sapporo Grill Japanese Steakhouse

1118 16th St., Sacramento

(916) 448-1818

www.sapporogrill.com

Hours: 4-10 p.m. Sunday, 11 a.m.-10 p.m. Monday and Tuesday, 11 a.m.-midnight Wednesday and Thursday, 11 a.m.-2:30 a.m. Friday, noon-2:30 a.m. Saturday

Happy hour: 2-6 p.m. Monday through Saturday, 4-6 p.m. Sunday, with extended drink specials until 7 p.m. daily, late night 10 p.m.-2 a.m. Friday and Saturday (food specials only)

The real steal: Select from all draft beers, hot sake and sake bombs for $3, house wine by the glass and $4 well drinks; the Peach Paradise goes for $5 during happy hour.

Appetizers range from $4 to $8 with house favorites such as pepperfin, honey miso ribs, and lettuce wraps. Rolls range from $5 to $6.50, and some of the favorites are their crunchy roll, Super Cal, and the café special.

During late-night happy hour, they offer specials on appetizers including buffalo wings and Sapporo sliders that range from $6 to $9, and a DJ performs as well.

The vibe: This unique restaurant fuses a sushi joint and a steakhouse but also has a modern lounge feel with Japanese influences, starting with a bamboolike wall behind the hostess desk.

The smooth, green marble bar contrasts with the wooden sushi bar top at the center of the restaurant. Large flat-screen televisions and projection TVs are perfect for watching a game.

A private dining area behind the lounge is available for a banquet, bachelor party or birthday. It can be closed off or left open with a glimpse of the restaurant.

Light pop music plays in the background.

Signature drink: The specialty cocktail of choice during happy hour is the $5 Peach Paradise. It's made with Absolut Peach, fresh orange juice and strawberries for a sweet and refreshing summer cocktail.

Bathroom break: This three-stall bathroom is tucked away at the back of the restaurant. There are two sinks with a black-framed mirror hanging above each one and black tiles on the floor.

Alternative libations: A popular drink, especially when you come with a large group, is the $3 sake bomb. It comes with a half-cup of Sapporo beer and a shot of sake, with just a hint of the rice in the flavor creating a unique beer cocktail.

Something extra: Happy hour works everywhere but the dining room, leaving you with seating at the bar, the sushi bar, the lounge or on the patio. The most popular seats are at the lounge itself. Two large wooden plank tables with bar stools are perfect for a large happy hour, and stone-topped tables and plush seats are available for a more intimate gathering.
