Regional Digest: School district reinstates 80 percent of sports budget

The Sacramento City Unified School District board has voted to reinstate 80 percent of the sports budget for the coming school year.

District spokesman Gabe Ross said high school athletic directors will get together "to talk about what the structure will look like with the reductions, but the program as a whole will continue."

Board members voted earlier this year to eliminate funding for sports to help close a budget shortfall of $28 million that the district says could grow to $43 million if a statewide tax measure fails in November.

Each of the district's comprehensive high school sports programs had received $154,000 for coaching stipends, transportation and equipment.

"Everyone realizes what effect eliminating sports would have on our enrollment," Ross said.
