Sutter St. cattle drive launches Folsom rodeo
Yee-ha! The longhorn steers will be running down Sutter Street in Folsom on Thursday night. Or trotting, anyway.
The cattle drive is part of the kickoff to the 52nd annual Folsom Pro Rodeo. A Wells Fargo stagecoach also will be on hand, along with some real cowboys.
Preceding the cattle drive is a decidedly less historic event, the "Bulls & Brews Urban Iditarod," which features people dressed up in wacky costumes pushing shopping cart "sleds" past the Gold Rush-era storefronts of Sutter Street. It's actually a food drive, with participants competing to collect the most food donations in their carts from onlookers.
The rodeo itself will run from Friday to Sunday. Gates open each night at 6 p.m.
The lineup includes roping and riding events. The American flag will arrive by parachute each evening, followed by a fireworks display and live country music by the Chris Gardner Band in Mike's Golden Spike Saloon.
For tickets, go to www.folsomprorodeo.com and check out the schedule. Reserved seats are $24.50, and general admission for adults is $19.50. Children under 10, seniors and active members of the military get in for $15.

Info: Rio Linda Centennial Committee and the American Legion Post 521 are hosting an all-you-can-eat spaghetti dinner and dance Saturday to raise funds for the the town's centennial celebrations. The main celebration is planned Oct. 5-7. Saturday's event is scheduled from 5 to 10 p.m. at the American Legion Hall, 6700 Eighth St., Rio Linda. Tickets are $10 per person in advance (available at the American Legion Hall or the Rio Linda Community Center) or $12 at the door.

Kings' future unfolds Thursday at NBA draft
Will they trade? Whom will they choose first? The Kings have the fifth overall pick in the NBA draft, which begins at 4 p.m. Thursday in Newark, N.J. ESPN will televise the event.

Citrus Heights ponders vacant council seat
The Citrus Heights City Council on Thursday will review options for filling the vacancy created by Jayna Karpinski-Costa's resignation from the council earlier this month. The council could leave the position vacant until the November election, call a special election or appoint someone to fill the remainder of the term, which expires in December. If the council decides to appoint someone to fill the seat using the process it did in 2005, applications would be sought and interviews conducted, and an appointment would be made by Aug. 6.

Choral concert to benefit Francis House Center
The Sacramento Gay Men's Chorus is sponsoring a benefit concert for the Francis House Center. The event is at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Pioneer Congregational Church, 2700 L St., Sacramento. Beside the Gay Men's chorus, groups scheduled to perform include the American River Chorus and the Sacramento Women's Chorus. Tickets range from $10 to $35.

Walk dog, raise funds for Cancer Society
Bark for Life, a fundraising noncompetitive walking event for dogs and their owners, will take place Saturday at Southside Park in Sacramento. The event, a fundraiser for the American Cancer Society, is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Cost is $25 per dog registered online before the event, or $30 at the event.

Olympic gymnastics trials this week in San Jose
As the London Olympics approach, male and female athletes will compete for a chance to land spots on the U.S. teams at the U.S. Gymnastics Olympic Trials in San Jose. The men's and women's artistic gymnastics competition is Thursday through Sunday. The Olympic women's team will be chosen Sunday and the men's team will be chosen Saturday. The rhythmic and trampoline gymnastics championships are Tuesday and Wednesday. San Jose's HP Pavilion will house all the competitions. Tickets can be purchased in packages for people who wish to observe multiple rounds of competition or for single sessions. Tickets to observe all sessions range from $130 to $525.

Wimbledon fortnight begins today in England
Novak Djokovic and Petra Kvitova will defend their respective men's and women's singles titles at Wimbledon. The two-week tennis tournament begins today and concludes with the women's final July 7 and men's final July 8.

New Chick-fil-A to open in Folsom
Atlanta-based chicken sandwich/meals chain Chick-fil-A will open its new restaurant this week in Folsom. The restaurant at 2675 E. Bidwell St. will give away a year's supply of Chick-fil-A meals to the first 100 adults in line on grand-opening morning. The line for the "first 100" will open at 6 a.m. Wednesday, with prizes to be awarded about 6 a.m. Thursday. If there are more than 100 people by 6 a.m. Wednesday, the top 100 spots will be determined by raffle. The restaurant will open to the public immediately after prizes are awarded.

Entrepreneurs Showcase at Convention Center
Folsom's Velocity Venture Capital will host its third annual Entrepreneurs Showcase from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. Thursday at the Sacramento Convention Center.
