With contract talks stalled, Save Mart Supermarkets' employees are talking strike in an effort to ramp up the pressure on the Modesto grocery chain.
The head of Roseville's Local 8 of the United Food and Commercial Workers threatened late Monday to call for a strike authorization vote if there's no deal on a new contract by this week.
Meanwhile, UFCW Local 5 in San Jose began holding its strike authorization vote Tuesday against Save Mart. Voting continues through Friday.
A strike authorization is just that it gives union leaders the power to declare a work stoppage, and acts as a statement of solidarity.
But it doesn't mean a walkout is imminent or even inevitable. Members of both UFCW locals voted to authorize a strike against Raley's weeks ago.
Both grocery chains, along with Safeway, are pushing the UFCW for concessions on health care and other issues.
