ROCK AMERICA'S BIRTHDAY!

What: A lot of folks will have Wednesday off for the Fourth of July holiday, so why not plan a night out Tuesday to kick off the festivities? James Hunter, a Grammy-nominated R&B/soul artist, will finally be back in Sacramento for one show at Harlow's. They've been trying to get him for four years, since his "The Hard Way" album was released in 2008. Hunter's voice has been described as somewhere between Sam Cooke "smooth" and Bobby "Blue" Bland "scorched." Paste magazine says Hunter's got "sexy songs to charm your pants off!"

When: 6 p.m. (doors open), 7 p.m. show Tuesday

Where: Harlow's, 2708 J St., Sacramento

Tickets: $35 at www.harlows.com with special guest the Harley White Trio


A DAY OF MUSIC, DANCE

Many steps on display at Fairytale Town show

What: Our city is rich in its culture and diversity. Fairytale Town will showcase both with an International Music & Dance Celebration on Saturday with nonstop performances by regional groups showcasing dances – all at the park's outdoor Mother Goose Stage. What will you see? African dance and drumming, Japanese folk dancing, Scottish highland dancing and many more "steps" from around the world.

When: 11 a.m.-3 p.m. (the park is open 9 a.m.-4 p.m.)

Where: Fairytale Town, 3901 Land Park Drive, Sacramento

Cost: The celebration is free with park admission: $5 for adults and children ages 2 and older, free for kids ages 1 and under.

WOMEN'S WISDOM EXHIBIT

Artful show of 'New Beginnings'

What: "New Beginnings" is the title of the Sacramento Women's Wisdom art group exhibit, which opens Saturday at Alpha Fired Arts Gallery. The artists, members of the community service group, hope to raise awareness and bring much-needed funds to Women's Wisdom, which offers arts programs to women in need. One of the artists whose work will be featured is longtime member and "Keeper of the Clay" Veronica Kyle.

When: Exhibit opens 6-9 p.m. Saturday and runs through July 25

Where: Alpha Fired Arts Gallery, 4675 Aldona Lane, Sacramento

Cost: Free
