Accomplishment: Selected as a member of the Monterey Jazz Festival's Next Generation Jazz Orchestra

Details: Rocamora, 16, began playing the trumpet at 11. He has participated in state and regional honors concert ensembles, winning several outstanding soloist awards. The Next Generation Orchestra, composed of the top high school players in the nation, tours Japan this summer.

Kudos to: Karen Kelly, lung cancer expert

Accomplishment: Selected as a fellow with the American Society of Clinical Oncology

Details: Kelly is associate director for clinical research at the UC Davis Comprehensive Cancer Center. She was among 11 oncologists awarded the lifetime recognition this year. ASCO is composed of 30,000 specialists from across oncology disciplines. Kelly is a lung cancer expert at the forefront of evaluating anti-cancer agents. She is building the cancer center's phase 1 clinical trials and continues to see patients in the oncology clinic.

Kudos to: Sonja Atkins, coordinator of Safe Kids Greater Sacramento Coalition

Accomplishment: Won top public service award from National Highway Traffic Safety Administration

Details: Each year the administration recognizes safety leaders from around the country for outstanding contributions to improving highway safety. Atkins was recognized for her efforts and support that resulted in the passage of California's booster-seat law.

Kudos to: Jan Soules, Elk Grove quilter

Accomplishment: Won Judge's Choice ribbon at Carson Valley Quilt Guild Show

Details: Soules won for her quilt "Circus, Circus." Quilters traveled from California, Arizona and Texas to compete with Nevada quilters.
