Family Watch: Even the superhero films are fairly clean

Published: Friday, Jul. 20, 2012 - 12:00 am | Page 17TICKET

THE DARK KNIGHT RISES

Rating: PG-13 for intense sequences of violence and action, some sensuality and language.

What it's about: The Dark Knight has to come out of retirement to save Gotham from anarchist- terrorists.

The kid-attractor factor: It's Batman, right?

Good lessons/bad lessons: Never steal anything from someone you can't outrun.

Violence: Lots and lots, with a high body count, but little blood.

Language: There are a few very-mild profanities.

Sex: Anne Hathaway and Marion Cotillard keep Bruce Wayne up at night.

Drugs: An aperitif, here and there.

Parents' advisory: Gloomier and more apocalyptic than, say, "The Avengers," and too long for tykes – OK for 12-and-up.

KATY PERRY: PART OF ME

Rating: PG for some suggestive content, language, thematic elements and brief smoking.

What it's about: Pop princess Katy Perry sings her hits and lets us see the trials and tribulations of her offstage life in this concert documentary.

The kid-attractor factor: Perry, despite the adult tinge to her songs, is very big with 'tweens and teens.

Good lessons/bad lessons: Showbiz marriages are teenage dreams, nothing more.

Violence: None

Language: Disney clean

Sex: Hinted at, vamped up with provocative costumes.

Drugs: Cigarettes

Parents' advisory: There are more bad messages in her songs than in the film built around them – OK for 10-and-up.

THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN

Rating: PG-13 for sequences of action and violence

What it's about: High school science nerd Peter Parker is bitten by a spider and becomes a vigilante. Again!

The kid-attractor factor: It's Spider-Man! Again!

Good lessons/bad lessons: Secrets have a cost. They're not free.

Violence: A bit of blood.

Language: A tiny bit of profanity Sex: Emma Stone in short skirts. And there's flirting. Oh yes.

Drugs: Serums and their antidotes don't count.

Parents' advisory: Suitable for all ages, but the lack of humor, heart, etc. make it a bit of a bore for 10-and-unders.

ICE AGE: CONTINENTAL DRIFT

Rating: PG for mild rude humor and action/peril.

What it's about: Continents break up, splitting up our extended family of mammoths, sloths and saber toot tigers.

The kid-attractor factor: Sight gags galore, drool and assorted other bodily functions rendered in 3D.

Good lessons/bad lessons: Don't let anyone change who you are. Bad news is just good news in disguise.

Violence: Brawls with pirates.

Language: Assorted "booty" jokes

Sex: A little flirting

Drugs: None

Parents' advisory: Whatever adults think of them, these movies are for the very young, best suited for 10-and-under.
