The Kings' Keith Smart is among the least experienced NBA head coaches, and of those, only Mark Jackson at Golden State (23-43), Dwayne Casey at Toronto (23-43) and Monty Williams at New Orleans (21-45) lead teams with records similar to Sacramento's 22-44 mark during the 2011-2012 season.
The question must be: Are a coach's energy, personality and potential enough to make a losing team a winner?
Smart leads a team with a core of undeniable talent. DeMarcus Cousins is expected to be a force. Tyreke Evans, still seeking a definitive role, has shown occasional brilliance. Guard Isaiah Thomas could be a stabilizing force. Interesting offseason moves have created a pool of talent deep enough to make the phrase "significant improvement" something other than a wistful utterance for the team and its fans.
Just one Western Conference team that made the 2012 playoffs, the Utah Jazz, had a head coach, Tyrone Corbin, with less experience than Smart. And Corbin was the hand-picked successor to Jerry Sloan, who coached the Jazz from 1988 to midseason of 2011. That's stability.
Smart followed Paul Westphal, who followed Kenny Natt, who followed Reggie Theus, who followed Eric Musselman. That's five head coaches since 2006.
So here's another question: Is Smart is the right man to lead a Kings renaissance, or is he the latest unproven coach to be fired when things go wrong?
