Mike Smith, checking a map at the National Weather Service offices in Sacramento, is one of about 100 meteorologists nationwide with the training to serve as on-scene weather advisers to crews fighting forest fires. Smith was the so-called "incident meteorologist" whose data helped direct the fight against the Mill fire in the Mendocino National Forest this month.
