WWII prisoner to speak

What: Len Kovar, author of "WWII Prisoner of War: How I Survived," will speak at the Sylvan Oaks Library about his wartime experience. Now 88, Kovar was a bombardier and navigator stationed in Italy when his plane was shot down and he became a German prisoner of war for nine months.

Sweet safari

What: The 28th annual Ice Cream Safari will again be a cool summer activity at the Sacramento Zoo. Visitors can enjoy all-you-can-eat ice cream in cones, sundaes and floats. There will also be face painting, a dance party and live entertainment.

Where: Land Park Drive and Sutterville Road, Sacramento

Bug eaters on display

What: The Sacramento Bromeliad & Carnivorous Plant Society will display carnivorous plants - they mostly feed on bugs - at its annual show and sale at McKinley Park's Garden and Art Center. The event will feature educational displays on carnivorous plants and bromeliads - large, colorful plants that have become popular in hotel and mall displays.

Shall we dance?

What: One of Elk Grove's signature events, the Strauss Festival, concludes its four-day run this weekend at Elk Grove Regional Park. The nightly presentation of elegant waltzes and polkas is performed by amateur dancers clad in 19th-century costumes. The dances are choreographed to music by the family of Austrian composer Johann Strauss. Now in its 25th year, the Strauss Festival draws 30,000 spectators a year.

SUNDAY

A pear affair

What: A Delta tradition since 1972, the Courtland Pear Fair returns with an array of food (including pear pies) and fun. A parade through town will begin at 1 p.m.

Where: 180 Primasing Ave., Courtland

When: 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Cost: Admission is free (parking is $10 per car, $5 per motorcycle and $2 per bicycle)
