San Jose fighter wins judo bronze

LONDON – Making her Olympic debut, Marti Malloy had just lost in the women's judo semifinals Monday but had to prepare quickly for the bronze-medal match.

"You want to be mad and angry and upset," she said. "But my coach pulled me aside and said, 'You came here to win.' "

Malloy kept her emotions in check, then took her frustration out on Italy's Giulia Quintavalle, the defending gold medalist. The Washington state native based in San Jose scored an ippon – judo's version of a knockout – two minutes into the the 57-kilogram match.

In the semifinals, Malloy made a crucial error against Corina Caprioriu of Romania. Trying for an aggressive move, Malloy was thrown with only seconds remaining.

Within 20 minutes, it was time to start warming up for Quintavalle. That match did not last long.

"When I ended up catching her with a full score at the end, the shock of it, it still gives me goose bumps," said Malloy, who earned the second Olympic judo medal by an American woman.

Women's basketball – As expected, the United States routed Olympic newcomer Angola 90-38. Candace Parker led the way with 14 points and 12 rebounds.

"The goal is to continue to get better every game, and I think that was what we did," Parker said after the Americans improved to 2-0.

Women's volleyball – In a possible title-match preview, the top-ranked United States, seeking its first gold medal, beat defending champion and second-ranked Brazil 25-18, 25-17, 22-25, 25-21.

Brazil beat the United States in the 2008 final but has lost five straight matches to the Americans.

Women's beach volleyball – Two-time defending champions Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh Jennings won their 16th straight match, 21-14, 21-19 over the Czech Republic's Marketa Slukova and Kristyna Kolocova.

The Americans, who have not lost a set in three Olympics, fell behind 18-15 in the second before tying it 18-18 en route to the victory.

Women's water polo – In her Olympic debut, Maggie Steffens tied the Olympic single-game record for goals with seven as the United States opened with a 14-13 victory over Hungary.

Women's soccer – Colombia's Lady Andrade was suspended for two matches for punching Abby Wambach on Saturday during the United States' 3-0 victory.

Men's diving – David Boudia and Nicholas McCrory became the first U.S. men to medal in diving since 1996, taking the bronze in the synchronized 10-meter platform.

China's Cao Yuan and Zhang Yanquan won the gold, and Mexico's German Sanchez and Ivan Garcia took the silver.

Men's boxing – The United States suffered its first loss after a 4-0 start when light heavyweight Marcus Browne couldn't maintain a third-round lead and lost 13-11 to Australia's Damien Hooper.

Men's soccer – Switzerland's Michel Morganella was expelled from the Games for a threatening and racist tweet about South Koreans after South Korea beat Switzerland 2-1 Sunday.

Tennis – Venus Williams and Serena Williams won singles matches and also teamed for a doubles victory.

In men's play, top-seeded Roger Federer of Switzerland beat Julien Benneteau of France 6-2, 6-2, and Russia's Dmitry Tursunov of Folsom lost to Feliciano Lopez of Spain 6-7 (5), 6-2, 9-7.
