What's up: Race for the Arts

Published: Sunday, Aug. 12, 2012 - 12:00 am | Page 3AANDE

HOOFING IT FOR THE ARTS

Lace up for your favorite organization

What: You can run, walk or cheer from the sidelines at the 2012 Race for the Arts, set for Aug. 25 in William Land Park. The annual event raises important funds and awareness for California nonprofit performing, cultural and visual arts organizations, along with school music, drama and art programs. That includes dance, theater – you name it. They get 100 percent of the pledges designated to them.

When: 8:30 a.m., 5K run/walk (3.1 miles); 9:30 a.m., kids' fun runs

Starting line: 15th Avenue and Land Park Drive, Sacramento

To register or for more information: www.raceforthearts.com. You can register online and pay by credit card, or download an entry form and mail the completed form with your entry- fee check. Entry forms also are available at Fleet Feet locations, Raley's and Bel Air stores, California Family Fitness Centers and Hobrecht Lighting. Register the day of the event starting at 7:15 a.m.

Fees: $30 adults, $15 kids fun runs (ages 12 and under). Entry fee includes race T-shirt.

MUSIC WITH DEEP ROOTS

Down from the L.A. mountain

What: Who's up for some foot-stomping Appalachian bluegrass – only channeled through a rock band from L.A.? Rose's Pawn Shop is coming to Harlow's next weekend. Singer- songwriter Paul Givant – through Craigslist – met his bandmates and the group began its musical collaboration in 2005. You'll hear the sounds of Woody Guthrie with Ramones overtones. Definitely a unique vibe.

When: 9 p.m., Saturday

Where: Harlow's, 2708 J St., Sacramento

Tickets: $20 advance, $25 at the door for this 21-and-up event at www.harlows.com. Click on the Mother Hips show. (Rose's Pawn Shop opens.)

MUSIC THAT SAYS 'THANKS!'

Mercy Me! It's time for an evening of tunes

What: The UC Davis Health System will host a free outdoor concert Thursday featuring the popular dance band Mercy Me! There also will be a kids zone with games and crafts, and the UCD Trauma Prevention Program will provide free helmets and helmet fittings for kids who bike or skateboard. The event is a thank-you to the community, staff, students and faculty for their work.

When: 5:30-8 p.m. Thursday

Where: Held on the lawn next to Shriners Hospitals for Children Northern California, 45th and X streets on the Sacramento campus of UC Davis

Cost: Free and open to the public. Participants should bring blankets or lawn chairs. Pack picnic baskets or purchase food and beverages on site.
