Union Pacific Railroad says Roseville will be a primary testing ground for testing new technologies designed to reduce diesel emissions from freight locomotives in California.
UP is investing $20 million in 25 experimental locomotives, 16 of which will operate out of Roseville railyards. The other nine will operate out of the San Bernardino County community of Colton.
Omaha, Neb.-based UP said it wants to move closer to the federal Environmental Protection Agency's Tier 4 emissions standards for new locomotives starting in 2015. The Tier 4 baseline is a 45 percent reduction in the oxides of nitrogen emissions.
The experimental locomotives are intermediate line-haul units, with an operating range of approximately 200 miles and will be used exclusively in California.
One Roseville-based locomotive will test the combined use of exhaust gas recirculation, diesel oxidation catalyst and diesel particulate filtering. The other 15 experimental units working out of Roseville can be retrofitted with exhaust gas recirculation and other emissions-reduction technologies.
Testing on all 25 locomotives is scheduled to last through 2014.
