Amid budget cuts and rising tuition, 22 University of California employees earned more than $1 million last year, up from six earning that much in 2007.
Seventeen of the million-dollar earners were medical doctors or administrators at UC hospitals. Health care salaries nationwide have risen along with health care costs during the last several years. Doctors in the UC system are usually paid with revenue generated by their hospitals, not through student fees or taxes.
Four of the million-dollar earners were coaches, including the two highest-paid public employees in the state. UC Berkeley head football coach Jeff Tedford earned $2.88 million last year and UCLA basketball coach Ben Howland earned $2.14 million. Their salaries are largely paid by boosters and proceeds from their programs. Five years ago, only one coach, Tedford, earned north of $1 million.
The other million-dollar earner was Marie Berggren, treasurer of the UC regents. She made about $1.1 million last year, up from $833,000 five years ago. Berggren, who oversees the system's investments, earns more than any state employee not a doctor or coach. She made twice as much last year as the chief investment officer of the California Public Employees Retirement System, the largest public pension fund in America.
