No school is cooler than UC Davis.

So said Sierra Magazine, which named the university the top campus on its America's Coolest Schools list for its work in climate change and its efforts to become a more sustainable campus.

What is UC Davis doing right?

Sierra Magazine cites the campus Unitrans bus service, the student-run transit line that serves the university and city, and the bicycle-friendliness that has become a community trademark.

Sierra, the Sierra Club's official publication, also lauds the campus's recycling, composting and conservation efforts.

UC Davis diverts nearly 70 percent of campus trash from landfills and recently launched a lighting initiative to reduce electrical use on campus by 60 percent in the next three years.

Stanford University, at No. 3, and University of California, Irvine, at No. 9, were the other California schools in Sierra's top 10.
