Anyone planning a visit to Lassen Volcanic National Park is encouraged to check with the visitor's center for wildfire or smoke conditions.
The Reading fire, which lightning sparked on July 23, is being fought in the north-central region of the park. Several campgrounds have been closed because of the blaze , including Butte Lake, Crags and Lost Creek. However, many areas of the park remain open, according to a statement by Park Superintendent Darlene M. Koontz.
"The smoke conditions of the park change on a daily basis with several areas experiencing clear skies and cooler temperatures," Koontz said.
The park's most popular trails remain open, Koontz said, including two of the park's hydrothermal areas and Lassen Peak trail, which will be the site of an Aug. 31 full-moon hike.
Information on open facilities, activities, trail status, and current conditions is available at www.nps.gov/lavo, on Twitter @LassenNPS, on Facebook or by calling (530) 595-4480.
