Leading Off: Indy cars are much faster -- and safer

IndyCar zooms into Sonoma with its new race car and a new track configuration for Sunday's Indy Grand Prix.

Qualifying is this afternoon.

After surviving another crucial crossroads, the open-wheel series appears headed in the right direction. The cars are faster – and safer, too.

"We're faster – no question about it," said driver Will Power, who won the last two Indy Grand Prixs at Sonoma. "We're faster everywhere with this car."

New engines and chassis design add speed, maneuverability – and excitement.

"The racing's been great," Power said. "Except for one or two people, everybody's a contender for a spot on the podium."

Following the death of two-time Indianapolis 500 winner Dan Wheldon in the series' 2011 finale, IndyCar retooled its cars and tweaked its tracks.

More foam and a better cockpit fit help protect drivers. Modifications also cut down on wheel-to-wheel contact.

"As a group, we were unanimously skeptical about how the cars looked and how the cars would race," driver Charlie Kimball said. "But to a person, we've all changed our tune."
