Re "Ag college leaders step down" (Our Region, Aug. 31): The loss to the UC Davis College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences of Dean Neal Van Alfen and Executive Associate Dean James D. MacDonald begs for explanation. Who really made the decision to fire Van Alfen prematurely and without cause? Why did Provost Ralph Hexter's statement of Aug. 28 neglect to mention that MacDonald then resigned in protest of this decision?
Hexter began his statement by saying, "Chancellor [Linda] Katehi and I were notified Tuesday morning by Neal Van Alfen that he has elected to resign as dean of the College of A&ES." The wording seems intended to imply that Van Alfen himself decided to resign, and that the chancellor's office only reacted in shocked surprise.
There is cause to wonder: Is UC's higher administration embarrassed by the "taint" of being a part of the venerable Land Grant College and State Experiment Station system?

• Don't use all capital letters. That's akin to yelling and not appreciated by the audience.
• Don't flag other users' comments just because you don't agree with their point of view. Please only flag comments that violate these guidelines.
