Re "Bill adds new factor for tenure" (Dan Walters, Sept. 5): Dan Walters' article about AB 2132 and the California State University's Appointment, Retention, Tenure and Promotion process is fraudulent. He claims that the the bill adds a third element, namely service, and that this consists of political activities favored by the left.
Hogwash: The Appointment, Retention, Tenure and Promotion process has always been based on three criteria: teaching, research and service. The latter refers primarily to administrative duties, for example curricular development. It may also include some of the things mentioned by Walters, such as out-reach to under-served populations.
AB2132 would simply codify what has been CSU policy for half a century. Service has always been an official part of the requirements. It is not new, sinister or left-wing.
