• EAST SACRAMENTO EDIBLE GARDENS TOUR

Where: Theodore Judah School and five east Sacramento homes

When: 10 a.m.-4 p.m. today

Hosted by the Sacramento chapter of Soroptimist International, this second annual tour features six diverse gardens that provide food as well as beauty. The school's Science Alive gardens get kids excited about growing food (and eating it, too). Proceeds benefit Sacramento area programs for disadvantaged women and children.


• PLANTS THAT BLOOM IN THE FALL

Where: Big Oak Nursery, 10071 Grant Line Road, Elk Grove

When: 10 a.m. today

Ellen Zagory, horticulture director of the UC Davis Arboretum, will discuss drought- tolerant and colorful plants that can take the heat while providing fall beauty.


• DEADHEADING AT DUSK

Where: Historic City Cemetery, 1000 Broadway, Sacramento

Admission: Free

Learn about old garden roses while helping volunteers tidy up the cemetery's famed rose garden.


• ARDEN PARK FALL GARDEN TOUR

Where: Start at 1217 Eastern Ave., Sacramento

When: 10 a.m.-2 p.m. next Saturday

Admission: $10 in advance (call for tickets), $15 day of event

Hosted by the Arden Park Garden Club, this tour features a wide variety of diverse and charming gardens, most within walking or biking distance.


Home related activities

• GOLD COUNTRY FAIR

Where: Gold Country fairgrounds, 1273 High St., Auburn

When: 11 a.m.-midnight today, 11 a.m.-10 p.m. Sunday

Admission: $10 general; $8 seniors ages 62 and up; free for children 12 and under; $5 for parking

This country fair closes summer with lots of family fun.


• GOLD BUG QUILT SHOW

Where: Church of the Foothills, 2380 Merrychase Drive, Cameron Park

When: 10 a.m.-4 p.m. today

Admission: $7 women; children age 12 and under and all men admitted free

More than 100 locally made quilts will be displayed. This show also features wearable art, home goods, raffles, demonstrations and more.


• 37th ANNUAL SACRAMENTO OLD CITY ASSOCIATION HOME TOUR

When: 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Sept. 16
