Forum is set for Elk Grove mayor, school board candidates

Mayoral candidates and Elk Grove Unified school board hopefuls will face a panel of journalists at the Elk Grove Candidates' Night from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday.

The forum, at the Holiday Inn Express at 9175 W. Stockton Blvd., will be hosted by The Bee, Elk Grove Patch and Elk Grove News.Net.

The first hour will feature interviews with the six candidates for mayor.

Sophia Scherman, a retired businesswoman and a city councilwoman; Lynn Wheat, a registered nurse; Greg Higley, a business owner and notary; Gary Davis, a city councilman; LaWanna Montgomery, an educator and business owner; and Jerry Braxmeyer, a business owner, are running to be the city's first elected mayor.

Candidates for the Elk Grove Unified board will be interviewed during the second hour. Eight people are vying for three seats.

Susan Parvis, a parent; James Letoa, an educator; and Tony Perez, a retired teacher, are running in Area 1. The incumbents in both Area 6 and Area 7 were appointed to the board to complete the terms of board members who retired or resigned because of health reasons. Jake Rambo, the incumbent, and Steve Ly, a teacher, are running in Area 6. Alfred "Al" Rowlett, the incumbent; Carmine Forcina, a retired teacher; and Theresa Beals, a parent, are running in Area 7.
