Ride along on Catherine Russell's voice
What: Catherine Russell is one of America's most treasured singers. Her jazz and blues renditions reach into the heart of the Great American Songbook.
Russell and her quartet are headed from New York City to the 2012 Monterey Jazz Festival (next weekend), and she's making a stop in Sacramento for a show Friday at Harlow's.
Russell is the daughter of Luis Russell, Louis Armstrong's longtime music director, and vocalist and bassist Carline Ray. She's been a backup singer for artists such as Paul Simon, David Bowie and Cyndi Lauper.
Her previous solo albums include 2008's "Sentimental Streak" and 2010's "Inside This Heart of Mine." Russell is a familiar face among jazz lovers at Lincoln Center, but her musical tastes will transport an audience from a Harlem dance hall to a French café to a gin join in New Orleans and into church.
