Re "Romney parrots Netanyahu on Mideast policy" (Editorial, Sept. 18): In writing that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was "opposed to Palestinian statehood," one wonders if The Bee's editorial board is keeping up with the news.
The Christian Science Monitor in June 2009 reported that "Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu broke new ground with his speech Sunday. He voiced support for the first time for a Palestinian state." Netanyahu said, "We will be ready in a future peace agreement to reach a solution where a demilitarized Palestinian state exists alongside the Jewish state.”
In his May 2011 address to the U.S. Congress, Netanyahu said: “I stood before my people and said that I will accept a Palestinian state; it’s time for President Abbas to stand up before his people and say, ‘I will accept a Jewish state,’ ”
Haaretz reported May 14, 2011 that, "A source who saw the letter that Netanyahu sent to Abbas said it included an official pledge by Netanyahu, for the first time in an official state document, to establish a demilitarized Palestinian state in keeping with the principle of a two-state solution."
