The space shuttle Endeavour has embarked on its final journey, on a flight path expected to soar above the state Capitol around 9:30 a.m.
After landing at Edwards Air Force Base north of Los Angeles on Thursday, the 747 jet ferrying Endeavour on a nationwide victory lap took off around 8:15 a.m. today. The start had been delayed an hour to increase the probability that fog over the San Francisco area would dissipate before the flyover, according to NASA.
The shuttle is expected to reach the state Capitol midmorning, before making low, sweeping passes over San Francisco, the Silicon Valley including the Ames Research Center in Sunnyvale and Los Angeles.
NASA is encouraging social media users to share their Endeavour sightings with the hash tags #spottheshuttle and #ov105 (the Endeavour's vehicle designation).
You can watch for updates and follow the coverage live on sacbee.com, which is carrying live streaming from NASA cameras showing the venerable spacecraft's final trip.
Endeavour eventually will be on permanent display at the California Science Center in Los Angeles.
